Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugarloaf Mountain

Sugar Loaf Mountain is an island located within Greers Ferry Lake adjacent to Sugar Loaf Recreation Area. The Sugar Loaf Mountain National Nature Trail was developed by the Corps of Engineers in 1971 after the lake had filled and the peak of Sugar Loaf Mountain rose 540 feet above the water. The trail is 1.6 miles round trip, and there are numerous rest areas along the way to allow visitors to set their own pace as they enjoy the beauty of nature.

The mountain is home to an abundance of wildlife that may be viewed while hiking the trail. Deer have been seen swimming across the lake from the mainland to reach the mountain. There is also an Eagles nest located on the North side of the mountain. They have been spotted out hunting and diving for fish near the mountain.

Once you reach the top, 1001 ft above sea level, the panoramic views of the lake and surrounding countryside are priceless. The trail attracts many visitors each year from all over. The trail can be accessed only by water and a courtesy dock is available on the southeast side of the mountain.

Pontoons can be rented from Peters Sugar Loaf Marina to get over to the mountain, or make an adventure out of it and rent a canoe! You can paddle over and carry a picnic basket up to the top to have lunch while enjoying the amazing views!
